They had the following children: 2 i. John Thomas II (1587-1655) ii. Charles, 9G Uncle. Born after 1587 in Wales, England. Charles died in unknown about 1610, he was 23.Second Generation ---------------------------------------- Family of Sir John I Clay (1) & Mary Carlton 2. John Thomas II Clay, 8G Grandfather. Born in 1587 in England.4,2 John Thomas II died in Charles City Co, Va in 1655, he was 68. John Thomas Clay, son of Sir John Clay landed at Jamestown, VA in 1613 and settled in Charles City County, Virginia. John Thomas Clay, the Grenadier (hired soldier in the King's army) arrived in the new world in February 1613 according to the muster on the TREASURER. The TREASURER was commanded and partially owned by Captain Samuel Argall, who was a brother of Elizabeth Argall Filmer, ancestress of Martha & Lucy Green Clay (wife of Henry Clay 1713-1764). It is stated in his muster that he (John Clay) was a planter before the goverment of Sir Thomas Dale. Sir Thomas Dale was deputy governor of the Virginia Colony from ?? until August 1, 1611, however he also served the colony from March 1614 until May 1616. This last term is surely the reference in the muster since John Clay arrived in the new world in February 1613. John Clay was the first of this family in Virginia. He was living at Jordan's Journey, Charles City, County, Virginia in 1625 when he made a muster of this family in the census of that year as follows: John Claye in the "Treasurer", February 1613 Ann Claye, his wife in the "ANN" August 1623 William Nichols, servant, aged 26 in the "Duke" May 1619. In "Bottom's List of Emigrants to America 1600-1700" (The Muster of the Inhabitants of Jordans Journey), quote:..."Charles Little taken the 20th of January, 1624 of these, the Muster of John Claye..." John Clay, 1200 acres in the County of Charles City, due 100 acres to him as an old planter before the goverment os Sir Thomas Dale, and the other 1100 for transportation of 22 persons. By West-July 13, 1635. NOTE: John Clay came to Virginia in 1613, his wife in 1623. In 1655 William Bayly patented 400 acres purchased from William Clay, son of John Clay. These persons may have been ancestors of Henry Clay, Senator from Kentucky, whose first recorded ancestor Henry Clay, was living in that part of Henrico County, VA. which is now Chesterfield County, Va. when extant records began in 1677. There is also a family of Clays in Surry County, Va. from an early date. August 23, 1643, John Wall patented 1790 acres on Chippoakes Creek, between John Hooke and William Pilkington, adjacent John Clay and John Freme. One William Bailey patented 400 acres of land in Charles City, May 1, 1655, "part of a dividend of 200 acres granted Captain Francis Hooke, 26, October 1637 and assigned to John Clay and John Freme and by inheritance descended unto William Clay son of said John and by William Bailey purchased of said William Clay, the younger." On the 18th of February, 1663 Anthony Spilltimber of Surry and wife Mary daughter of Robert Harris, formerly of Isle of Wright, sold 250 acres on Lawne's Creek to John Clay of Surry. In 1688 this land was the subject of a suit between Anthony Spilltimber and John Jennings who married his wife's sister. Spilltimber said that he had sold his rights to John Clay, Sr., "upon which he now liveth." John Clay made his will in 1675 as "John Clay the elder", and gave his son William the land he had bought of Anthony Spilltimber. If not he and any brothers may be the ancestors of the Clay family of Kentucky, otherwise the first mentioned William Clay was their probable ancestor. William, son of John the elder, married Judith daughter of Captain William Corker, Burgess of James City in 1655-66. William Corker was the son of John Corker, Burgess for James City in 1633 and 1645. He was Clerk of the House of Burgesses, 1645-1653 and Married Dorcasborn in 1601. William Corker, Burgess for James City 1655-56 and Captain of militia, married Lucy, sister of Captain John White, and made his will in Surry, September 4, 1677 naming children, Susanna, wife of George Branch of Surry, Judith wife of William Clay, and Lucy, wife of Thomas Jordan. Captain John White was a Burgess in 1641 and had a lot in Jamestown in 1644. He was probably son of William White, haberdasher of London. His will was proven in Surry in 1679 an he left his property to his two sisters Lucy Corker and mary White. William Clay died in 1675 an left two daughters, Elizabeth who married John Brantly and Sarah who married George Barlow. John Brantly died in 1730 leaving a son Clay Brantly and grandsons John and Thomas Brantly sons of Clay George Barlow was the son of Thomas Barlow who died in 1679. George made his will in which he mentions sons, George and Thomas, and three daughters. (see will) In 1618 when John Thomas II was 31, he married Anne Nichols, 8G Grandmother, in London, England. Born about 1590 in England. They had the following children: i. Thomas, 8G Uncle. Born in 1615 in Charles City Co. VA.5 Thomas died after 1673, he was 58. Thomas Clay his eldest son was given the other land and John was given stock and cattle. Thomas was then living in Surry fro he was a tithable in Lawne's Creek Parish in 1668. In 1673 Thomas was accused of unlawful assembly and of declaring he could not pay his public taxes. He made his will in Surry in 1679 and gave all of property to his wife Elizabeth, no children mentioned. However he had a son Thomas who was mentioned in the will of his brother William in 1676, but Thomas may have died before his father's will was made. ii. William, 8G Uncle. Born in 1617 in Charles City Co. VA. William died after 1655, he was 38. iii. Francis, 8G Uncle. Born in 1625 in Charles City Co. VA.5 Francis died in Westmoreland Co, Va in 1667, he was 42.5 3 iv. Henry Clay died suddenly at the supper table at the age of 92. General Green Clay says that Henry married Mary Mitchell, daughter of William and Elizabeth Mitchell. They lived and died in Chesterfield County, Virginia at the old place on the West side of Swift Creek. They had four sons, William, Henry, Charles, and John, who was the grandfather of Henry Clay, late member of the U.S. Congress and two time Whig candidate for U.S. President, negotitator of the treaty of Ghent, he was known as the Great Compromiser. Henry was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. Henry died of Nattles at the "Roells" during his annual birthday dinner to his descendants. He is buried at Morrimont, 9 miles southwest of Richmond, VA. In 1709 when Henry was 36, he married Mary Mitchell, 6G Grandmother, daughter of William Mitchell & Elizabeth Innes, in Henrico Co Va. Born in July 1693 in Swift Creek, Chesterfield Co Va.6,2,7 Mary died in Chesterfield Co Va on August 7, 1777, she was 84. They had the following children: 7 i. William Mitchell (~1710-1774) 8 ii. Henry (1711-1764) 9 iii. Mary Obedience (~1716-) 10 iv. Charles (1715-1789) 11 v. John (1718-1762) vi. Amy, 6G Aunt. Born in 1720 in Cumberland Co, Va. Fifth Generation ---------------------------------------- Family of Henry Clay (6) & Mary Mitchell 7. William Mitchell Clay, 5G Grandfather. Born about 1710 in Henrico Co Va.6,2,4 William Mitchell died in Kanawha Valley, WV on September 10, 1774, he was 64.8,9,10,11,12 Occupation: Farmer. William Mitchell Clay was born between 1708 and 1710 to Henry Clay and Mary Mitchell in Chesterfield County, VA. There has been some speculation that he may have been born prior to the marriage of his parents in 1708; hence the use of his mother's maiden name as his middle name. William was the eldest of six children. In the order as they were mentioned in Henry Clay's will. Martha Clay evidently died sometime between 1764 and 1768, as no other record of her is found after 1764, and in 1768, William Clay placed an advertisement in the Virginia Gazette stating that "...my wife Agnes has eloped from my bed, and robbed me of things of considerable value..." William and Agnes were either back together in 1769, or she was living alone but still using his name, since she gave a deposition in the Chesterfield County court of May 5, 1769. Note that William Clay was in Bedford County by 1768. It is entirely possible that this William and Agnes Clay are another couple altogether, as by the late date of 1768, there were several William Clays living in Virginia. William Clay grew up in Chesterfield and Henrico Counties and spent most of his adult life in Goochland and Cumberland Counties before moving west to Bedford County between 1765 and 1768. It is unclear as to when he moved to Bedford County since the indenture between William Mead and William Clay contains the year 1765 in the text, but wasn't acknowledged by the court until 1768. It is certain that he was living in Bedford County on the Blackwater River in 1770 when he sold some property to his son William Jr. This region of the county evidently became part of Pittsylvania County since later land sales (involving sons Mitchell and Jesse) for sections of the same land are found in that county. The last known record for William Clay in Pittsylvania County is for sale of land to John Kendall in 1773. It is unknown if William Clay left the county at that time. Several of his sons were migrating to areas further west at this time. Most notably was Mitchell Clay, who was given a grant of 803 acres in the Clover Bottom area in what is now Mercer County, West Virginia. Mitchell moved his family to this land in 1774, becoming the first settler of the county. David Clay and possibly Ezekiel were also in this region at this time. Jesse Clay apparently moved from Pittsylvania County to Henry County, as several records, including land grants, appeared in the 1780's. William Mitchell Clay died on September 10, 1774, while hunting deer for Col. John Field's company of independent Rangers. He was part of the unit assembled under Gen. Andrew Lewis travelling to Point Pleasant to participate in the impending battle. Though it is not clear why a 64 year old man would be making a 250 mile journey on foot, he earned the dubious distinction of becoming the unit's first casualty. about 1732 when William Mitchell was 22, he married Martha Runyon, 5G Grandmother, in Henrico Co Va.10 Born about 1715 in Virginia. They had the following children: 12 i. William (1735-1812) ii. Ezekial, 5G Uncle. Born about 1737 in Henrico Co Va. Ezekial died in Va in 1777, he was 40. iii. Obediah, 5G Uncle. Born about 1738 in Henrico Co Va. Obediah died in Unknown about 1818, he was 80. 13 iv. Mitchell (1739-1811) v. David, 5G Uncle. Born about 1740 in Henrico Co Va. Meredith died in 1806, he was 64. vii. Nancy, 5G Aunt. Born about 1744 in Henrico Co Va. Nancy died in Unknown about 1835, she was 91.

Born on 31 JAN 1715/16 in Cumberland Co, Va.6,2,4 Charles died in Powhatan Co, Va on February 25, 1789, he was 74. 11. John Clay, 6G Uncle. Born in 1718 in Henrico Co Va. John died in Henrico Co, Va in 1762, he was 44. Sixth Generation ---------------------------------------- Family of William Mitchell Clay (7) & Martha Runyon 12. William Clay, GGGG Grandfather. Born in 1735 in Henrico Co Va. William died in Franklin Co, Va in October 1812, he was 77. Occupation: Farmer. On May 10, 1756 when William was 21, he married Ann Old, GGGG Grandmother, daughter of William Old, in Amelia Co, Va. Born about 1735 in Henrico Co Va. They had the following children: 21 i. Juda (1771-~1820) 13. Mitchell Clay, GGGG Grandfather. Born in 1739 in Henerico Co Va.14,8,5,4,7,9,15 Mitchell died in Giles Co Va on March 20, 1811, he was 72.16 Occupation: Farmer. 8 Mitchell Clay and his family settled on the Bluestone at Clover Bottom in 1775 where he built a considerable farm. From the date of the settlement to the autumn of 1783 he remained unharmed by Indians who were known to have traveled north of Clays farm. August 1783 after Clay had harvested a crop of grain, he placed two of his sons, Bartley and Ezekiel, to build a fence around the stacks of grain so that his cattle would not gain access to it. Mitchel went out in search of game because his oldest sons were away from home. In the afternoon, while the two boys were putting up the fence and the older daughter with some of the younger girls were at the river washing, a party of eleven Indians crept up to the edge of the field and shot Bartley dead. The discharge of the gun alarmed the girls at the river, and they started to run for the house. The path leading directly by where Bartley had been killed. An Indian attemped to scalp the boy and at the same time to capture the older girl Tabitha, who took to defend the body of her dead brother. In the struggle she reached for his knife and missing it, the Indian drew in and stabbed her repeatly, she however, several times wringing the knife from his hand cast it aside, but he recovered it and continued cutting her until he literally chopped her into pieces before killing her. The small girls had escaped to the house, and their brother Ezekiel, had been captured by an Indian. The Indians, after securing the scalps of Bartley and Tabitha, took their prisoner Ezekiel and left the scene. As soon as they departed Mrs. Clay took her children and carried the bodies of her dead ones to the house and placed them on a bed. She left the cabin with her other children and made her way through the woods for six miles to the house of James Bailey. Mitchell returned from his hunting to discover the dead bodies of his children and supposed that all the family had been killed or captured, he immediately left the cabin for the New River settlements. He reached them early in the morning followed closely by the Indians who stole a number of horses. Information was conveyed to the various neighborhoods, and a party of men under Captain Matthew Farley went to the Clay cabin and buried the bodies of Tabitha and Bartley. The men then began their pursuit of the Indians. Among these men were Charles Clay, Mitchell Jr, James Bailey, William Wiley, Edward Hale, Isaac Cole, Joseph Hare, John French, and Captain James Moore. The Indians took the old Indian trail from the Bluestone across Flat Top Mountain, and down the divide between Guyandotte and Coal River along the top of Cherry Pond Mountain where the trail seperated and one branch went down the west fork of the Coal River, and the other down the pond Fork of Coal River. It was late in the evening when they reached a point near the mouth of Pond Fork and discovered smoke from fires started by the Indians where they camped. The party drew close to where the Indians camped just as dawn began. A large Indian arose from his bed and walked out a short distance and approached Edward Hale who shot and killed the Indian. Two Indians were killed outright and one that was wounded attempted to escape to the hill, and in broken English he begged for his life, but Charles Clay, whose brother and sister had been killed by them, refused his plea and killed him on the spot. The rescue party recovered the stolen horses but not Ezekiel Clay, who was carried away by the fleeing Indians to their village in present day Chillicothe. Ezekiel was burned at the stake. In 1760 when Mitchell was 21, he married Phoebe Belcher (15) , GGGG Grandmother, daughter of Richard Belcher & Mary Obedience Clay (9), in Bedford Co. Va.4 Born about 1740 in Bedford Co. Mitchell held a large rifle which was too heavy for him to conviently handle, and in firing at the Indian missed him. The Indian turned and attempted to escape, but was killed by another member of the party. Charles Clay cut a strip of hide from the back of one of the Indians he killed, which he used for a razor strap. This razor strap later came into the possession of his brother Mitchell Clay Jr, who gave it to his son Charles L Clay, who in turn gave it to his son James M Clay. It was not lost until recently. Mitchell Clay Jr often hunted in the area that is today Raleigh County. He most probably came to this area after passing through it during the pursuit to rescue his brother Ezekiel.. Mitchell later settled in the area. Mitchell's Ridge, which is located between the waters on Piney and Soak creeks in Raleigh Co, on the one side and waters of Stone Coal and the Winding Gulf on the other, was named for Mitchell Clay Jr. When he was a young man, while hunting on this ridge, he stood in one place and killed five deer within a few minutes time. When he reported this to his friends at their camp, one of them said: "We will call this Mitchell's Ridge" to which he laughingly replied: "Yes, call it my ridge." Recently, there was standing at the forks of Stone Coal near Lillybrook a large beech tree on which the inscrption "Mitchell Clay, 1811" was plainly visible. The Coal City community is now located on Mitchell's Ridge. In 1794 when Mitchell Jr was 21, he married Juda Clay (21) , GGG Grandmother, daughter of William Clay (12) & Ann Old, in Giles Co VA.
