5. Jean De La Chaumette1, 7G Grandfather. Born in 1664 in Rochechouart, Poitiers, Franch.1 Jean died in Stafford Co, Va in 1727, he was 63.

Jean (John) (Baptist?) De La Chaumette, was born in the town of Rochechouart about 1664. On the modern day map of France, Rochechouart appears as a community of 3952 inhabitants, located some 42 kilometers east of Saint Junien on the route leading through Chalus to Limoges at the junction of the Craine and Vayres Rivers. Jean's (John's) father was Daniel De La Chaumette, an attorney. His mother

was the daughter of another town lawyer, Joseph Fourgeaud. Jean (John) had married, perhaps a local girl. His wife was dead by the time he turns up in London, England.

On September 29,1695, Jean De La Chaumette, widower, married a widow, Elizabeth Bourgeois Bouvet. In 1708, Jean De La Shumate and other well-to-do, French Huguenots sailed to the West Indes, where they remained for several years. His wife died there.

The loss of his wife seems to have impelled Jean (John), with his three young sons, John II, Samuel and Daniel, to leave the homestead they had purchased on Martinique and seek their fortune on the mainland. Their choice of the Virginia Colony seems to have been guided by the fact that Jean's brother, Arnoul, had earlier settled in the Isle of Wight. Jean De La Shumate arrived in Isle of Wight to find that his brother had been dead almost 20 years and that land was pretty well taken up. With money in his pocket and with his three sons, Jean headed

Westward to more hospitable land. In passing through Westmoreland County, Virginia, he found that his brother-in-law, Mark Hardovin, a Norman Emigrant, owned an Inn in Stafford County, Virginia, near where Germantown trail crossed Elks Run. The Hardovins were well-to-do.Hardovin was also spelled Hardin.

Jean De La Shumate arrived in the ELk Run section no later than 1722. Through his brother-in-law, Mark Hardin, he bought some choice bottom land along Elk Run from the biggest landowner in the area, William Allen. The deed is recorded in Stafford County, Virginia, deed book. He bought 200 acres of land, which was in indication that John Shumate I, (as we will hereafter call him), was more than moderately wealthy. John Shumate I died before 1729.

The tax list's of Prince William County, Virginia, for the years 1752-1753 show that Samuel was no longer a resident in the area. But John II and Daniel I had possessions of 100 areas apeice.

About 1803, Daniel V I (son of Daniel I) and his brother Strother D. went to South Carolina by way of North Carolina. He moved into Greenville County after 1804. So far a deed in his name has not been found. In 1805 and 1806, he paid taxes on 100 acres of the land originally granted to Daniel I.

The orginal (De La Chaumette) Shumate Family History was compiled by Mrs. Clyde (Clara Shumate) McWilliams, of DeKalb, Mississippi, and dated September 29,1966. Without her orginal vision, ideas, dreams and endless efforts none of this on going genology works would have been possible.

With continuing research we have been able to make corrections, added additional information, to her data, and with help from others we have been able to add additional families. We hope that someone in the future generations will pickup and carry on our work. Every attempt has been made to correct and amend where the new information has been provided. Where we have failed, please forgive us.No oversight or error is intended.

The Shumates settled at Rich Creek on the New River and migrated steadily down the river and up it's tributaries. Haskell Shumate has reported an excellent histoy stating that Shumate was a French name.

The great-grandson of Jean de la Chaumotte, Daniel Shumate came from Fauquier Co, Va with his wife Millie Callison, and settled at Rich Creek Va, in 1780, being the first settler of Rich Creek.

Revisions of the Shumate home still stand in that community today as a prominent reference point. the original house was log and was gradually added to, and finally a large brick home was built and still stands on the knoll on the east side of town. Daniel and Millie's children were Tollison, Daniel jr, Silas, John, Hardin, Nancy, Margaret, Rhoda Melinda, Rachel, Elizabeth, and Polly. Many of the Shumate descendants interacted with the French family, being near to one another.

Harvey Milton Shumate, son of Anderson Shumate(Tollison's son) bought the William Henderson French mansion and 2,800-acre farmlands near Athens after the Civil War at a delinquent tax estate sale.

Confederate Colonel French undoubtedly had a tough time after the war because of the severe restrictions the new state of WV placed on all citizens who had supported the rebel cause. These new laws made it impossible for southerners to hold important jobs. Also, Colonel French had neither a wife or family, but had the largest home in the area. William Henderson French and and the Harvey Milton Shumate family are buried at the site of the old mansion homeplace.
