First Generation ---------------------------------------- 1. James Stewart, GGGG Grandfather. Born in 1719 in Ulster Co, Ireland.1,2,3 James died in Staunton, Va in 1757, he was 38.3 John Stewart of Rockbridge co, Va was thought to be the father of our early ancestor jJames. John Jr settled also in Rockbridge and a sister may who married John Hamilton and settled in Augusta Co, Va. John was of the "House of Stewart" that landed in Philadelphia, Pa and came directly to the Shenandoah Valley. Our early Virginia family was notified of inheritance in Scotland, a number of year after setling inthe Valley, but due to lack of correspondece during their years in Ireland and america, they were unable to identify themselves to the satisfaction of the crown, therefore losing their estate. In many of the old boks of the Shenandoah valley one can find the notation during the Indian raids of James Stewart and his son James, being captured by the Indians. James was burnt at the stake in front of his son, who later escaped 1757. During the French and Indian Wars of 1755 James served as Captain of the 2nd column of the Augusta Co Militian under John Dickenson. James Stewart's plantation in the Cowpaster was unclaimed in 1765. Signed by Processioners returns to the Worshipful court, by James McCay and James Scott. Many places have no livers in, and many don't know thier property lines. In Bath Co, Va Annals p 200 it is stated that James Stewart gave his name to the stream known as "Stewarts Creek" but this is now "Stuart's Run".Second Generation ---------------------------------------- Family of James Stewart (1) & Mary Ann Lafferty 2. Ralph Stewart, GGG Grandfather. Born on December 17, 1752 in Cowpasture, Augusta Co, Va.4,5,6,7 Ralph died in Wyoming Co, WV on November 17, 1835, he was 82.8 Ralph Stewart Ralph son of James and Ann Lafferty was born in Cowpasture Augusa Co, Va on Jan 17, 1747, at his fathers plantationin the Borden Tract on Stewarts Creek. At the age of 15 he cose his odler borhter Robert as his guardian. His father was killed by indians in Sept 1757. At 14 he volunterred to fight the indians, later he was with a parto of men who made an attack on a group of 96 indians, they rescred 6 white prisoners. Peace was made with these indians, a treaty signed which protected them under the crown, and the governor of va . but ralph and James stewart (bros) were hunters and had valuable furs in the lodge which the indians had destroyed,..After the indians, left, the boys followed them and surprsing them at night, they killed 5 of the protected indians.. Later Ralph told a friend of the killings and being secretly jelous of Ralph because of a young lady, the friend reported the slaying. A warrent was sworn out for the brothers because of the treaty; hearing of this from friends the brothers departed to the new river section where they scouted out for 18 months, seeing but one other person in that time. The governor pardoned them and they returned home. Ralph married Mary Elliott about 1767 Children: John-1769,,Absolum-1770;;Charles 1771;;Ralph Jr-1772,; James- 1774;;Mary Ann-1773;;Richard-1775;;Rebecca-1785 she married Isaac Chapman in 1811. Ralph was in the indian scout service until the close of the revolution 1783. During that year he moved his family to Kentucky where his wife died. John born in 1769 in Augusta ws a soldier of the Virginia line for 3 years, 1785 to 1788. He had land in Fayette and Mercer co, 1781-1782. He was kiledin service. Ralph Stewart, son of James and Ann Lafferty Stewart, was born in the cowpastrue, Augusta Co Va on Jan 17 1747 at his fathers plantation in the Borden Tract of Stewarts creek. Amy (1805-) 12 xii. Ora (1812-1895) 3. Robert Stewart, GGGG Uncle. Born about 1740 in Ulster Co, Ireland. Robert died in Martins Fort, Crooked Run, Augusta Co, VA in June 1772, he was 32. On August 20, 1766 when Robert was 26, he married Isabella Foster, in Augusta Co, Va. They had one child: i. Born on June 15, 1790 in Giles Co, Va.2 Catherine died in Wyoming Co, WV on May 26, 1888, she was 97.2 9. Robert Stewart, GGG Uncle. Born in 1795. Robert died after 1881, he was 86. 10. William Stewart, GGG Uncle. Born in 1801. 11. Amy Stewart, GGG Aunt. Born in 1805. 12. Ora Stewart, GG Grandmother. Born on January 30, 1812 in Giles Co, Va.8,1 Ora died in Raleigh Co, WV on July 19, 1895, she was 83.13 On August 21, 1830 when Ora was 18, she married Charles Lewis Clay, GG Grandfather, son of Mitchell Jr Clay & Juda Clay, in Raleigh Co, Va. Born on January 6, 1801 in Giles Co, Va. Charles Lewis died in Raleigh Co, Va on December 5, 1884, he was 83.14 They had the following children: 14 i. Rebecca J (1828-1910) 15 ii. Born on July 18, 1828 in Raleigh Co, Va. Rebecca J died in Raleigh Co, WV on May 28, 1910, she was 81. On August 1, 1852 when Rebecca J was 24, she married James Cantley, in Raleigh Co, WV. Born about 1826. James died in Claysville, MD on June 26, 1862, he was 36. They had the following children: i. Janetta Raleigh, 1C2R. Born on September 14, 1855. ii. Nancy Jane, 1C2R. Born on May 31, 1856. iii. James Adam, 1C2R. Born on August 12, 1861.
15. Druzilla Clay, GG Aunt. Born on February 8, 1831 in Raleigh Co, WV. Druzilla died in Raleigh Co, WV on February 24, 1903, she was 72. On March 23, 1853 when Druzilla was 22, she married George W Cantley, in Raleigh Co, WV. Born on December 29, 1830 in Raleigh Co, WV. George W died in Raleigh Co, WV on January 21, 1898, he was 67. 16. Henry Byron Clay15, GG Uncle. Born on September 22, 1835 in Raleigh Co, Va. Henry Byron died in Raleigh Co, WV on October 12, 1882, he was 47. Union solidier during the Civil War. He had 5 boys and 2 girls. about 1865 when Henry Byron was 29, he married Nancy A Thompson. Born in March 1846 in Kanawha Co, Va. They had one child: 19 i. Ira T. (1875-1928) 17. Greenville Clay, GG Uncle. Born in October 1836 in Logan Co, Va. Greenville died in Raleigh Co, WV in 1927, he was 90. On September 1, 1859 when Greenville was 22, he married Elizabeth Ann Pettry, daughter of John Pettry & Mary Mays, in Raleigh Co, WV.16 Born in February 1838 in Fayette Co, Va. On July 8, 1874 when Mary Caroline was 26, she married James T Jr Aliff, G Grandfather, son of James T Aliff & Mary Freeman, in Raleigh Co, WV.18 Born on October 26, 1849 in Roanoke, Va.17 James T Jr died in Edwight, Raleigh Co, WV on August 11, 1922, he was 72.19 They had the following children: 20 i.
