One of the eary families that came to what is now Boone County and settled with the people here, was the family of James and Lucy (Ferrell) Brown, who came from Monroe County in 1823. They brought with them a large family of children, and settled on the upper West Fork of Pond. Perhaps the first settler in that part of Boone County. James Brown was born in 1780 in the part of Greembrier County that was later to become Monroe County. He was the son of William III and Sarah Brown and was the oldest of eleven children. There is one incident that took place in the early 1780's that involved James and his mother Sarah. In Alfred Beckley's Memoirs which was written July 19 1876, and published in 1955 wrote in his book on page 43: "The last Indian war party, or expedition, to the Monroe river settlements of which we have account, had captured some white people, chiefly women and children, among others a mother with a suckling baby in her arms, and they retraced their way with their captives and plunder and some horses, to the "painted trees"(Paint Creek), where they struck camp, thinking themselves secure from pursuit. However, a party of whites, under a resolute leader, had, by rapid pursuit, overtaken them, and in the night, which was wet and drizzly, quietly surrounded them, remaining silent and hidden. As soon as it was light enough in the morning to discern objects the Indians were seen with their blankets on, grouped around their fires, and among others, a tall gigantic Indian a head and shoulder taller than the rest, doubtless the leader of the party. At a signal from the leader of the whites, they emptied their rifles. Down went their leader and one or two more, the rest fled, and the captives were rescued. In 1840 the writer (Alfred Beckley) was at the house of an old gentleman named James Brown, on the West Fork of Little Coal River, and he told him that he was himself the identical baby in his mother's arms on this occasion." Soon after James and his mother werre returned to Monroe County, James' father William III patented 230 acres of land on Bradshaw Run of Indian Creek, where James grew up, and on May 9 1804 married Lucy Ferrell. After their marriage, James and Lucy Brown made their home in Monroe County for nearly twenty years, during which time at least eight children were born.
